Beau woke up about a half hour after Nathan left. He looked at Sam with a bright smile. “Dad-dee.”

“Hey, little man. You must have been tired.”

Beau tried to get up as Carrie came around the bed to help him. “Whoa, Beau. Wait on Mama.”

“Mama.”

She held him close and twisted back and forth. “You’ve been a good boy and took a long nap. Let’s get you changed. We can’t stay too much longer. I only brought you one more diaper.”

“Carrie, is there any way y’all can stay here tonight? I don’t want you going to the house by yourselves until we get things taken care of.”

“Sam, we can’t stay here. Beau will drive you crazy before he goes back to sleep.”

“Nathan can get his crib from the house and bring it back.”

“Let’s see what the doctor says before we make that decision.”

“Baby girl, either y’all stay here with me, or I’m going home with you.”

“Sam, you can’t do that.”

He cocked an eyebrow at her, and she knew that was his “don’t argue with me” look. “They can try to stop me, but they won’t succeed.”

“When is the doctor due back?”

Sam pressed the red button attached to his bed. A few moments later Nurse Moore walked in. The smile on her face faltered when she saw Carrie and Beau were still there.

“I hope you’re getting plenty of rest, Officer Baxter.”

“When is the doctor coming back?”

“He usually makes his rounds just before shift change at seven. Why?”

“If we can’t make arrangements for my family to stay with me, then I’m leaving with them.”

“Sir? You can’t do that.”

“I can and I will. Do you have a portable bed that can be brought in this room for my wife and son?”

“Wife? Her name on the form isn’t Baxter.”

The look on Sam’s face was the same one he gave Carrie. She casually placed her hand over her mouth to hide the smile, but she couldn’t hide the humor in her eyes.

“Nurse Moore, please call the doctor and let him know I want to see him.”

“Yes, sir.”

When Nurse Moore turned, she paused for a moment, looking at Carrie with a questioning look on her face. “Do I know you?”

“I don’t think so.”

“You look like a girl I went to high school with, and your name on the form was really familiar.”

“Oh, really?”

“Are you from here?”

Carrie’s eyes cut toward Sam. “I live in Charleston.” Sam’s jaw clenched, and she could see him gritting his teeth.

“Oh, well you’ve got a twin running around here somewhere then.”

“Good to know.” Carrie’s smile couldn’t be faker.

She watched Nurse Moore walk out the door and turned to Sam. “Don’t start.”

“You don’t live in Charleston anymore. We just haven’t had time to get your belongings.”

“I went to high school with her. She was a bitch then, and I’ve heard she still is. I don’t want her knowing it’s me.”

“Come here.”

She walked to the bed and sat in the chair next to it. “You’re talking clearer.”

“I don’t think I’m getting as much medicine. I can actually feel my toes now.
